APPLICATION

 

            The participating institution must submit a duly accomplished form on or before January 8, 2016 online at http://uplbchemsoc2016.wix.com/kapnayan or to the office of the UPLB Chemical Society, A-134 Physical Sciences Building, UPLB, College Laguna 4031. Walk-in participants may be accepted depending on the availability of the limited slots. Admission to the contest proper is on a first-come first-served basis.

 

REGISTRATION

 

             All the contestants must accomplish all the necessary forms at the Quiz Committee registration booth on January 18, 2016, 7 am to 7 pm at Physical Sciences Building Lobby. Each participating team shall pay a registration fee to cover the expenses of the students’ contest paraphernalia. Shown below is the registration fee in each contest. Other provisions (i.e. accommodation/housing, transportation fees, etc.) are NOT COVERED by the fee.

CHEMISTRY QUIZ CONTEST

 

Kapnayan National Chemistry Quiz Contest is a part of the triennial activity of the UPLB Chemical Society held on the second semester of the UP academic year. The quiz contest covers the General Chemistry curriculum taught in regular and science/science-oriented classes. Questions related to this year’s theme will also be asked.


Eligibility Rules
1. All bona fide secondary level students of reputable and recognized learning institutions in the Philippines are qualified to participate in the

    competition.
2. Contestants should form a team that will represent their respective institution in the quiz proper.
3. Each team should
consist of three (3) members.
4. The delegates forming the said team may join other contests (maximum of 1) in the Kapnayan Week.

 

Elimination Phase
1. This phase will consist of a 70-item written examination.
2. All members of the team must participate in this phase.
3. The average of the total score garnered by all the participating members of the team shall be the team’s overall score.
4. The first 60 questions shall be considered for the team’s score and the remaining 10 questions will only be considered for the breaking of

    ties.
5. The examination will be good for 1 ½ hour.

 

Final Phase
1. The Top 15 teams, irrespective of region, who qualified in the elimination round, will compete in the final phase. The qualified teams will be

    announced prior to the final phase.
2. Ten (10) minutes before the quiz proper, the members of the team must be present at the venue. Otherwise, the team will be disqualified.

    The freed slot will be given to the school next in the rank in the elimination round.
3. All scores garnered in the elimination phase will not be accounted in the final phase.
4. The final phase shall consist of easy, average and difficult rounds, with 20, 15, and 15 questions, respectively. The point system will be as

    follows:

5. Each team will be given a set of answer sheets and scratch papers with the UPLB Chemical Society logo before the start of each round.
6. All questions will be read twice. After the first reading, each team will be provided with a copy of the question. Right after the allotted time

    has elapsed, the team should have submitted their answers to their respective proctors. Otherwise, the team shall not acquire any points for

    that question.
7. Scores shall be on cumulative basis. Thus all the teams will compete up to the difficult round. In case of ties, sudden death system will be

   administered. The team who got to answer the question correctly will be included in the final round. If the question is still unanswered,

   succeeding questions will be asked to break the tie.


Additional Notes    
1. Members of the team should be wearing their proper school uniform and identification cards during the contest proper.
2. NO CALCULATORS WILL BE PROVIDED by the Society.
3. Misspelled answers will be considered wrong.
4. Final answers must be encircled or boxed.
5. Avoid rounding-off intermediate solutions leading to the final answer.
6. All answers involving calculations should include the appropriate units as well as the specified number of significant figures or decimal

    places.
7. Any team caught cheating in any form will be automatically disqualified from the contest.
8. The board of judges shall be composed of UPLB Institute of Chemistry Faculty.
9. All questions or protests shall be directed to the board and will be entertained only before the succeeding question is read.
10. The board of judges shall resolve any matters regarding the question/s. The board’s decision is final and irrevocable.
11. The Quiz Committee reserves the right to change these rules with the appropriate notice to the concerned.

POSTER MAKING CONTEST

 

Kapnayan Poster Making Contest is a part of the triennial activity of the UPLB Chemical Society held on the second semester of the UP academic year. The contest focuses on the exhibition of inherent talent among the youth in terms of visual arts. The aim of the event is to cater the application and importance of creativity and imagination to scientific studies.


Eligibility Rules
1. All bona fide secondary level students of reputable and recognized learning institutions in the Philippines are qualified to participate in the

    competition.
2. There should be only one (1) contestant to represent his/her respective institution.
3. The delegates that will participate in the Kapnayan Chemistry Quiz Contest may contend to this event. However, the participant who will not

    be competing in the Quiz Contest is prohibited from joining another contest in the Kapnayan Week.

 

Contest Proper
1. The competing student must be present in the venue ten (10) minutes before the start of the event. Otherwise, he/she will be automatically

    disqualified.
2. The student should be in his/her proper school uniform and identification card during the event.
3. Only the following materials may be used in the contest:
    a. Â¼ illustration board and a standard no. 2 pencil (to be provided by the Society)
   b. Coloring materials (oil pastel, charcoal pencils, coloring pencils, poster color, acrylic paint, colored markers) (to be provided by the

       contestant)
4. The use of any other material not specified above will mean an automatic disqualification of the contestant.
5. The contestant is only given two (2) hours to complete his/her work. Deductions to the score garnered will be implemented upon violation.
6. The completed work must be given a title not exceeding 15 words in standard American English or standard Filipino.
7. Depiction of copyrighted material (i.e. establishment logo, mascot, etc) in the poster is prohibited. This will result in automatic

    disqualification.
8. The name of the contestant as well as the school SHOULD NOT BE WRITTEN on any part of the contest piece. This will mean an automatic

    disqualification to the contestant.
9. Criteria for judging will be announced before the start of the contest proper.
10. Announcement of the top 3 winners and awarding ceremonies will be in the program of the Kapnayan Chemistry Quiz Contest.

 

Additional Notes
1. Any colorant that has noxious smell is not allowed for use. 
2. Any modification or alteration to the size of the board shall mean an automatic disqualification.
3. All posters shall automatically become the property of the Society.

EXTEMPORANEOUS SPEECH CONTEST

 

Kapnayan Extemporaneous Speech Contest is a part of the triennial activity of the UPLB Chemical Society held on the second semester of the UP academic year. The contest focuses on the exhibition of inherent talent among the youth in terms of communication arts. The aim of the event is to cater the application and importance of public speaking to scientific studies.

 

Eligibility Rules
1. All bona fide secondary level students of reputable and recognized learning institutions in the Philippines are qualified to participate in the

    competition.
2. There should be only one (1) contestant to represent his/her respective institution.
3. The delegates that will participate in the Kapnayan Chemistry Quiz Contest may contend to this event. However, the participant who will not

    be competing in the Quiz Contest is prohibited from joining another contest in the Kapnayan Week.

 

Contest Proper
1. The competing student must be present in the venue ten (10) minutes before the start of the event. Otherwise, he/she is automatically

    disqualified.
2. The student should be present in any of the following attire: formal Western, traditional Filipiniana, or traditional Indigenous attire. Otherwise,

    this will mean an automatic disqualification to the contestant.
3. The proper school identification cards must be with the contestant during the contest proper.
4. The topic of the speech shall be announced during the contest proper.
5. Each participant shall be given two (2) minutes to prepare and two-three (2-3) minutes to deliver their respective speeches.
6. Deductions to the total score shall be given to those who exceed the prescribed time period.
7. Criteria for judging shall be announced before the contest proper.
8. Announcement of the top 3 winners and awarding ceremonies will be in the program of the Kapnayan Chemistry Quiz Contest.

 

Additional Notes
1. Any form of coaching from the audience is a ground for disqualification.
2. The participant in queue to deliver their respective speeches shall be confined in a closed door holding area. Any form of communication

between participants is prohibited.

SCIENCE INVESTIGATORY PROJECT CONTEST

 

Kapnayan Science Investigatory Project Contest is a part of the triennial activity of the UPLB Chemical Society held on the second semester of the UP academic year. The contest focuses on the exhibition of inherent talent among the youth in terms of scientific research and academic writing. The aim of the event is to cater the application and importance of research to scientific studies.

 

Eligibility Rules
1. All bona fide secondary level students of reputable and recognized learning institutions in the Philippines are qualified to participate in the

    competition.
2. There should be only one (1) team consisting of three members   (3) to represent their respective institution.
3. The delegates that will participate in the Kapnayan Chemistry Quiz Contest may contend to this event. However, the participant who will not

    be competing in the Quiz Contest is prohibited from joining another contest in the Kapnayan Week.

 

Contest Proper

  1. The institution must send the approved electronic copy of the report manuscript (i.e. manuscript of the report with a signed acceptance sheet indicating the positions of the panel of inquiry) on or before January 8, 2016 at kapnayan.chemsoc@gmail.com. The file must be in a word file with the following format: Letter-sized (8.5’x11’), Times New Roman font, 12 font size, 1 inch margin on all sides, and double-spaced.

  2. The name (or the abbreviation) of the school must be the filename of the report. (e.g. UPLB.docx).

  3. All entries must be original. Any entry submitted with evident forms of plagiarism shall be automatically disqualified (i.e. improper citation, no citation, gross plagiarism).

  4.  The participating team must have their report printed on a 2 feet in width and 4 feet by length poster containing the abstract, objectives, significance of the study, materials and methods, results and discussion and summary and conclusion. It is to be submitted on the registration day of the Kapnayan Week and to be returned at the end of the Kapnayan event.

  5. All posters must be presented in standard American English.

  6. The competing team must be present in the venue ten (10) minutes before the start of the event. Otherwise, they are automatically disqualified.

  7. The students should wear semi-formal attire during the presentation of the study.

  8. Each team is allowed to present their report for 15 minutes. A 5-minute question and answer portion will immediately follow after the time period has elapsed.

  9. Criteria for judging shall be announced to the participants through electronic mail a month before the event.

  10. Announcement of the top 3 winners and awarding ceremonies will be in the program of the Kapnayan Chemistry Quiz Contest.

 

Additional Notes:

  1. The Society is responsible for the printing of hardcopies of all the manuscripts thus, there is no need for each school to bring hardcopies during the Kapnayan Week.

  2. All the participating schools are qualified to push through the defense to be held on January 20, 2016.

  3. The recommended material to be used for the poster is tarpaulin. A sample format of the poster is attached herewith.

ESSAY WRITING CONTEST

 

Kapnayan Essay Writing Contest is a part of the triennial activity of the UPLB Chemical Society held on the second semester of the UP academic year. The contest focuses on the exhibition of inherent talent among the youth in terms of non-fictional literary composition. The aim of the event is to cater the application and importance of creativity and imagination to scientific studies.  

 

Eligibility Rules
1. All bona fide secondary level students of reputable and recognized learning institutions in the Philippines are qualified to participate in the

    competition.
2. There should be only one (1) contestant to represent his/her respective institution.
3. The delegates that will participate in the Kapnayan Chemistry Quiz Contest may contend to this event. However, the participant who will not

    be competing in the Quiz Contest is prohibited from joining another contest in the Kapnayan Week.

 

Contest Proper
1. The competing student must be present in the venue ten (10) minutes before the start of the event. Otherwise he/she is automatically

    disqualified.
2. The student should be in his proper school uniform and identification card during the event. 
3. The essay must be based from the photographs to be provided by the Society.
4. The 500 to 700 word essay written in standard American English must have a title no more than 15 words.
5. The work must be completed after 60 minutes upon receipt of the printed photograph.
6. All essays must be written legibly in black or blue ink on the contest sheet provided by the Society.
7. Announcement of the top 3 winners and awarding ceremonies will be in the program of the Kapnayan Chemistry Quiz Contest.

 

Additional Notes
1. All essays shall automatically become the property of the Society.
2. All submitted works must be original. Any contestant caught submitting plagiarized work will be automatically disqualified.
